The taping of the annual Black Girls Rock Awards took place last night in Newark, NY. Some of our favorite women of color came out to support each other for their awesome achievements. The looks were flawless as every hue of Black graced the red carpet. Take a look at how stars like Jill Scott, Estelle, Tracee Ellis Ross and more showed just how much Black Girls Rock!
First, let me apologize to my readers for being under a rock when this video premiered on Monday. J. Cole’s album is a favorite, and this song was on serious rotation when I bought it. The theme of house slaves uniting with field slaves to overthrow the slave master was depicted beautifully in the video.
The newly crowned Miss Japan, Ariana Miyamoto, has experienced tons of back-lash since winning the title due to her mixed race. Her father is African American and her mother is Japanese. Critics say she isn’t “Japanese” enough and my question is, “What’s that?”
For everyone who has ever been told that they have a “ghetto” name, this poem is for you. For years we have been told to stray away from naming our children certain names for fear of them not being accepted in Corporate America or not being taken seriously in the business world. Well this amazing poet has such an uplifting and bold message for anyone who has wished they had a more “normal” name.
This video was so touching. It almost brought a tear to my eye. I WISH a program like this existed when I was in school. “The World Is as Big or as Small as You Make It” is a short documentary that was shown at the Sundance Film Festival. In the film, teens from North Philadelphia participate in a program at their local recreational center that allows them to bond with other teens all over the world.
The tech world is one full of many faces, but not many of them are Black. When I met the President of Ume Technology, Inc., Clem Harrigan, at my launch event last week I was impressed with how he was contributing to the tech world with his new product (Ume) Drive.
(Ume) is a waterproof USB flash drive bracelet that provides functionality with a unique sense of style. It works with Mac and PC and comes in three distinct designs, the Vintage, Seamless, and Millennium. Here Harrigan talks about why he created this product and challenges he faced while building his company.
There are so many reasons I truly respect our First Lady, and one of the main reasons is because of her commitment to a healthy lifestyle. She takes care of herself and encourages others to do the same in ways that are fun.
Michelle Obama taped a segment for the TheEllen DeGeneres Show where she discussed how she was going to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the “Let’s Move” campaign during the White House’s annual Easter Egg Roll. After explaining how she was going to put a twist on things this year with a dance, she challenged Ellen to do the choreographed routine with her. They danced to a song that I am totally in love with right now, “Uptown Funk” by Bruno Mars and killed it!
