Black Business Shine: The Draper Space
I’m proud to feature artist Ronald A. Draper for my Black Business Shine this week. I featured Ronald for my Black History in the Making series back in 2013 for his amazing philanthropic works in the neighborhood of Harlem. Today he is the ONLY art gallery owner in the Bronx who is Black. I had the pleasure of attending his gallery opening on Sunday. It was stylish, innovative and bursting with all of the creative and inspirational energy that Draper has become known for.
All of his pieces are tailor-made for his clients. This means no replicas people (sorry), but it is because he takes pride in making work that expresses the originality of his clients.
“You don’t go and get a tailored suit and not get measured. How are you going to make something for me if we don’t have a conversation? That’s why we have to have this conversation [before I make you your piece]. My pride is in my tailored work,” he said.
Another sweet touch to his work is that everything has a pinch of gold in it to represent his girlfriend whose name is Goldie. Love it!
The Draper Space is located at:
175 Walnut avenue bet. 135th and 136th streets
Bronx, NY 10454
2nd floor || Suite 212
It is now open to the public with the following business hours:
All other times: by appointment
Draper loves doing workshops and his next one will be for Mothers and Daughters on May 10th. You can go here for more details.
Make sure to check out this young man’s website and stop by his gallery to see some of these dope pieces up close and personal.
