Black Business Shine: Katrina The Glam Artist

Screenshot_2015-11-09-11-21-33This week for our Black Business Shine series, we are featuring the uber talented and faith-filled make-up artist and nail tech, Katrina “The Glam Artist” Waller. Her work is outstanding! She shared with us a little more about who she is and how she went about starting her successful business.

What made you want to start your own business?

I’ve always wanted to work for myself even when I was working at my dream job, MAC Cosmetics. I always envisioned working for myself. I would do a lot of weddings, but my full-time schedule at work would sometimes cause me to turn away brides. I knew after 4 years with the cosmetics giant that it was time to move on and do my own thing. I’ve been thriving ever since.

How did you go about starting it?

I registered my business name, and got all of the necessary paperwork done. I do credit social media for my rapid growth and continued success. I also would do a lot of vendor events and nail parties. And of course, without God, I would be nowhere.

katrinaWhat makes your business stand out amidst others in the same field?

I take classes and find out what the latest trends are. This includes nail art trends, as well as, beauty products. I also pride myself in being extremely clean. Everything I use is sanitized and then discarded after each use. This includes pedicure liners which are thrown out after each pedi. No fungus or infections have ever been reported because of my hygienic practices.

What does it mean to you to be a Black Owned Business?

It means that I’m providing an alternative to what most people are used to. There are plenty of options when it comes to nails, but most people have no clue since they’re used to the same things (mediocre services and unsatisfactory results). Also, the way I do makeup is considered natural, soft yet flawless. I like to enhance the beauty that you’re born with, not alter your face or make you look like you’re about to perform at a drag show. No offense lol.

Please share a quote or saying that helps to keep you motivated every day.

“Let go; let God.”
