The Most Lit Moments of the 2016 BET Awards
The 2016 BET Awards was every bit as lit as it promised to be; in fact, we’ll go as far as saying it has been the best award show of 2016 thus far. From the moment we saw King Bey make the entrance to end all entrances, we knew we were in for an extraordinary night. If you watched, then you’re among those of us who are still in recovery mode from the best award show of 2016; if you didn’t, never fear; we did, and we’ve got the recap. Here are some of the most lit moments of the BET Awards 2016.
1: That Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar Collabo
King Bey damn near missed a flight to London so she could usher in the night’s celebrations with a show-stopping performance of “Freedom” alongside none other than Kendrick Lamar. This performance gave. us. our. entire. existence.
2: Taraji P’ Henson Gets Her Lemonade On
Ms. Henson listed “Lemonade Rules” from the black woman’s gospel according to Beyoncé. We did see a little bit of Cookie Lyon in there, too, when she got to the part where she started swinging a bat while still managing to look “flawless” (pun intended). 3: Bilal Tearing Up Prince’s “The Beautiful Ones”
He tore his shirt. He gyrated in the agony of unrequited love across the stage. He screamed. He baptized our ears with musical ecstasy. And we couldn’t help but see a little bit of Marvin Gay in him as he performed. This is how you do justice to “The Beautiful Ones.”
4: Alicia Keys in a glittering red jacket (à la Prince) and no makeup, not on piano as she usually is, but on guitar, performing ‘In Common’
This is “In Common” like you’ve probably never heard it.
5: Jennifer Hudson absolutely DESTROYING “Purple Rain”
We don’t know what the hell Madonna attempted to do at the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, but Jennifer Hudson, dressed in white, positively gave us goosebumps with her rendition of “Purple Rain,” in fact, she had the entire audience on its collective feet singing along.
6: Chloe and Halle “Drop” The Mic
Twin sisters and King Bey prodigies Chloe and Halle delivered some unbelievably beautiful vocals during their performance of “Drop.”
7: Samuel L. Jackson Checking Out One of Beyonce’s Dancer’s Ass as She Walked by On Her Way to The Stage
You know our collective panties get wet here at Soulreflectionz when a woke-ass black man gets to talking. To everyone that performed at last night’s show, we love y’all; we really do, but Jesse Williams was the one who brought the house down.
9: Janelle Monae’s Prince Tribute
Ass-cheek-baring and all; don’t believe us, just watch.
10: Usher Raymond’s “Don’t Trump America” T-Shirt
No doubt, black music royalty was not afraid to get political at last night’s show, and Usher was no exception. While he set our hearts aflutter and displayed perfectly executed dance moves to his single “No Limit,” he made sure to let audience members, TV viewers, and the media get a good look at the back of his T-Shirt. Read what it says. 11: That Sheila E. Prince Tribute, Though…
Sheila E. paid an emotional tribute to her long-time friend and mentor, and was joined onstage by Jerome Benton of Morris Day and the Time. No one could have done it better.
We’ve shared ours; now we’d like to know, what were your favorite moments of the 2016 BET Awards? Sound off in the comments.
