Women of the Black Lives Matter Movement to be Honored by Glamour Magazine

black-lives-matter-foundersBlack Lives Matter activists Opal Tometi, Alicia Garza and Patrisse Cullors have been chosen to be among those honored by Glamour magazine for its annual Women of the Year issue.

These three women have stood at the forefront of the Black Lives Matter Movement since its inception, and have inspired political activism globally among people of color.

When George Zimmerman was found not guilty in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, Alicia Garza publicly expressed her grief on Facebook. She ended her post with the words “Black people. I love you. I love us. Our lives matter,” and those words caught on.

Shortly after, the posts were shared by Patrisse Cullors, who added the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter. Opal Tometi saw the hashtag and reached out to the two women, volunteering to build a digital platform. The three women combined their passion for activism and The Black Lives Matter Movement was born.

“We gave tongue to something that we all knew was happening,” Tometi told Glamour. “We were courageous enough to call it what it was. But more than that, to offer an alternative. An aspirational message: Black lives matter.”

Among the other black women being honored are Zendaya Coleman and Simone Biles.

The Glamour Magazine Women of the year Awards will take place on November 14 in Los Angeles.
