New App Kudzoo Pushes Students to Do Their Best

kudzoo_app_developersPennsylvania-based entrepreneurs Trevor Wilkins and Logan Cohen are the creators of “Kudzoo,” an app that encourages students to excel in their studies. The app is free to download, and allows student users to upload their report cards, after which they will be rewarded with giveaways, deals, concert tickets, and even scholarship opportunities based on their grades and other academic achievements.

How the Pair Stumbled Upon the Idea

Wilkins shared how he met his business partner, Logan Cohen, during an interview with Ebony Magazine. He stated, “Logan and I met during my freshman year at a Phillies game and we stayed in touch throughout the years. After graduation I brought the idea to her, and I was originally going to launch it as a web site, but with her being very technologically savvy she suggested turning it into a mobile app.”

He added, , “From there, we were able to raise a little bit of money and start building the platform… [and now] we see ourselves as being able to insert our platform into what students are already doing, while giving them that extra support. If we can be that extra sense of motivation, we feel that we can really make a difference.”

Why they Think Rewarding Students For Good Academic Performance is Effective

As a child and a teen, Wilkins’ parents encouraged him and his siblings to perform well academically by rewarding them if they did so. For every A on their report card, they received $10, and for every B, they received $5. On the other hand, they would be penalized for a bad grade; for example, a C on their report card would cost 20 dollars.

As a result, the Wilkins children always made A’s and B’s, and when Trevor was just 12 years old, he became the youngest contestant ever to be featured on a TV show entitled Endurance on Discovery Kids. After high school, he was accepted into Princeton University.

Wilkins was inspired by the example his parents set, and sought to create a similar way to motivate other students. It is his belief that his parents’ example shaped his life, and helped him to become a successful entrepreneur.

How the App Got its Name

“Kudzoo” is actually the name of the world’s fastest-growing plant. Wilkins and Cohen want students to feel this way about their education; ever-growing because of it, and making their mark on the world. Since the app’s release, it has attracted 500,00 active users.

  • Great business idea it will push students to do better in school.

I am concerned about the expectation of extrinsic rewards for doing the right thing and feeling like a failure if you don’t accomplish such…jus my 2 cents
