Here’s Why Black Babies Die Twice as Often as White Babies
According to the Centers For Disease Control, African American women and their babies are at a higher risk for pregnancy and birth complications, including premature birth. Premature delivery is the leading cause of death among babies, with the rate 2.4 times higher among black babies than among white babies.
Why So High Among Black Babies?
Research shows that blacks are more exposed to pollution than whites. Poor blacks are more likely than their white counterparts to live near landfills, toxic waste sites, and congested highways, which puts them at greater risk of being exposed to tailpipe exhaust and other toxic effusions that can have adverse effects on the health of pregnant black women and their unborn children.
What Can Be Done
Paediatrician Dr. Candace Jones recommends that black expectant mothers who are living near such toxic sites attempt to do the following to lessen the risk of premature delivery.
- Choose other routes when travelling, avoiding congested highways as much as possible, to avoid vehicle exhaust.
- Keep allergens out of the house by closing windows and doors and removing shoes when entering the house to avoid pesticides and other pollutants from getting into the house.
- Vacuum often to remove allergens from carpeting, using a HEPA filter to reduce the amount of dirt, toxins and lead in your home.
- Don’t use a wood-burning stove while pregnant. The smoke can carry with it carcinogenic materials, including fine particulates, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and volatile organic compounds.
