Javon Johnson on Being Black and Happy
Civil Rights Heroine Fannie Lou Hamer said “I’m sick and tired of being sick and tired.” She wanted something else. She wanted rest, and joy, and even now, those two things are still so desperately needed among us blacks.
As a black man or woman, seeing so much harm being done to your own kind, feeling at ease seems like a far-fetched expectation, and experiencing joy may seem entirely out of reach; but happiness is a choice, and when we lift our heads with pride, and we choose to smile, it is only then that we have conquered our enemy, because we did not allow our joy to be stolen.
Javon Johnson beautifully explains in this spoken word piece entitled “Black and Happy” why we should choose joy.
