Chicago Public Schools to Receive $1 Million From Chance the Rapper

chance-the-rapperWhen Chance the Rapper met with Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner on Friday to discuss cuts to school funding, he ended up making the decision to deal with the issue on his own.

The Chicago native, real name Chancelor Bennett, announced via news conference on Monday that he is set to donate $1 million to the Chicago Public School system.

School district spokesperson Emily Bittner released the following statement:

“As a CPS graduate, Chance has shown Chicago students not only the heights they can achieve but the generosity they can share. We also appreciate his strong advocacy for Chicago schoolchildren, who suffer under the state’s discriminatory system of funding, which Gov. Rauner continues to perpetuate.”

At present, CPS has a $129 million budget deficit that could potentially force an early end to the school year.
