Soca on the Seas to Offer Scholarship to Caribbean Students
Soca on the Seas is a yearly-staged Carnival event which is held aboard Royal Caribbean’s Treasure of the Seas. This year, the event will be held over a five-day period following the Miami Carnival.
Soca on the Seas stated via a release that it is their belief that students pursuing courses of study in creative industries such as art, music, fashion and theatre should receive support in every possible way.
“The creative sector is a dynamic one that requires a developmental approach to ensuring its sustainability. This industry provides employment to thousands of people who have a passion and a vision for arts and culture. In this regard, we would like to contribute to the development of this industry through education and propelling young people to the next level of success is music, art, fashion and theatre,” reads the release.
The winner of the scholarship will receive a maximum of US$2000 and must be just beginning his/her second year at university.
The scholarship will be exclusively offered to tertiary level students pursuing Bachelor of Science Degrees in music, art, theatre, and fashion, and is open to students who are citizens or citizens by descent of CARICOM countries such as Antigua & Barbuda; Bahamas; Barbados; Belize; Dominica; Grenada; Guyana; Haiti; Jamaica; Montserrat; Saint Kitts & Nevis; Saint Lucia; Saint Vincent & The Grenadines; Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.
A copy of a birth certificate or other relevant national document is required for proof of nationality, and to be eligible to enter, students must have a GPA of at least 3.5, must provide a copy of their transcript, and must submit an essay based on the following question: “How Can the Creative Industries Impact Meaningfully In Economic Diversification?”
Ten essays will be selected, and the writers of these ten essays must then submit a 5-minute video recording explaining the points in their essay in detail.
The winner is to be announced on the Soca On the Seas Cruise on October 12.
