Omar Holman’s Case Study In Black Girl Magic

black girl magicAs she lay battling the unrelenting blows of cervical cancer, Henrietta Lacks had cells stolen from her body; cells which later became the center of extensive medical research.

The cells which were stolen from this brave woman’s body were the source of  the HeLa cell line, the first immortalized cell line and one of the most important cell lines in medical research.

The HeLa cell line is an ongoing source of medical data to this day, its value unmatched.

A black woman did that without even knowing it.

Her family weren’t compensated for the extraction of the cells.

Yet even in death, the magic of Lacks cannot be denied, just as the magic of the black woman in general cannot be denied.

Omar Holmon pays a fitting tribute to this magic.
