La Frida Puts a Fresh Perspective on Biking
“La Frida” is a dope new project by a group of self-described “cycloactivists,” which combines biking and street art to promote sisterhood among black women, the raising of our collective voices, and to arouse the desire within us to positively fill more public spaces.
La Frida teaches girls and women how to ride bikes while simultaneously creating what has been described as a “moving home” for them to share art and poetry.
Issues such as racism and sexism are boldly confronted in this project, which also operates book shops, poetic creation workshops, and installs free bike racks in public schools and universities with the intent of promoting this means of transport as a more human and pleasant one for students and teachers alike.
Representatives of the project stated,
“We believe that mobility can be less damaging to the planet and even contribute to cities development as bikes are an ecological way of moving around.”
