Trini Model Naomi Chin Wing Slays Saint Laurent
This notion stemmed particularly from the fact that, like many other teenagers, she was bullied at school, and told that she was “too tall.”
Chin Wing found the perfect way to silence her critics: she became an almost overnight sensation on an international catwalk.
The 17-year-old, who hails from Trinidad and Tobago, made her international debut walking for design house Saint Laurent for the label’s Spring 2018 ready to wear collection on Tuesday. Following her debut, she was described by Vogue Magazine as “striking.” She stated,
“This is my first big international job, and I am so grateful to be given the opportunity to be involved with such an iconic fashion house.”
Chin Wing was trained professionally as a model by Coco Velvet International founder Christopher Nathan (also from Trinidad and Tobago), who described her as shy and having low self-esteem when he discovered her.
“I met her while doing screenings for the Coco Velvet Fashion workshops,” said Nathan. “Her mother’s boyfriend brought her because he thought she had potential and I liked her immediately.”
In just two years, he transformed the unassuming young woman from having no modeling experience to being runway-ready, beginning with her winning the Coco Velvet Top Model competition in 2015, which saw her earn goodies such as a three-year contract with Elite Latin & South America ELSA, and a global contract with IMG, an international agency that represents top models like Alek Wek and Bella Hadid.
Chin Wing concluded,
“For this island girl, traveling to Paris, working, and meeting new people is a dream come true.”
