How Daveia Odoi is Spreading Black Girl Joy

Daveia OdoiWhat’s the best way to fight the “angry black woman” stereotype? spread images of black women smiling and exuding joy and contentment.

That’s exactly what entrepreneur Daveia Odoi aims to do with “The DynaSmiles by DNT,” her very own collection of artwork depicting black girl joy. Odoi’s images appear on several products, some of which are journals, makeup bags, smartphone cases and laptop covers. 

The DynaSmiles by DNT is already a hot sell in the US, the UK and Ghana, and has received exposure via EssenceBlack Enterprise, and BET.

Her Inspiration

Tired of seeing black women portrayed as angry and hostile, Odoi, a native of Franklin Park, New Jersey, decided to do something about it.

She stated,

“I couldn’t find anything that looked like me or expressed the sense of joy I was feeling. After browsing in stores and online proved to be unsuccessful, I decided to make my own and share what I made with others.”

In addition to creating images of smiling black women, Odoi also wanted to ensure that real-life black women had more reasons to smile as well; hence, she launched  “Shine Brighter,” an online academy through which she mentors other business owners.

She also speaks at several business training events each year, sharing her expertise with aspiring entrepreneurs.
